Milan

It was in the heart of the city of Milan that the biggest urban transformation of the last decades occurred here in Italy. And within this new context stands the Unipol Tower, which hosts the Milan offices of the Italian insurance giant. The new headquarter is characterized by a fine and functional design, the result of a rigorous project development, through every element of the building, from the volume to the facade system, from the interior to the public spaces around the structure, contribute to create an efficient machine without giving anything to the pure formalism. The building has 23 floors above ground – plus 3 floors underground – to a height of nearly 127 meters and a total area of 31,000 square meters. The facade, with its shaped geometry, is also a metaphor of the web-like system of social relationships. The external structure of the work is made of a grid of tubular elements with circular section, 600 mm in diameter and 40 mm thick, entirely welded together, providing to the building its characteristic shape recalling the form of a nest. The external Diagrid is connected to the reinforced concrete core through trusses made by H profiles and rectangular beams of welded sheets. The Diagrid also supports the substructures of the external cladding, composed of double-H beams made of welded sheet metal and bolted together, on which the windows of the external “frame” will be placed. Between the central core and the external steel structure, there will be the “great void”, within which a vertical garden will be created and it will end at the top with a greenhouse. |
